YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – May 23, 2011 – Antioch College Trustees voted Sunday to appoint Bronx-based educator Shadia Alvarez and Columbus-based organizational consultant Joe Foley, both Antioch graduates, to the College’s governing board, the Board Pro Tempore, Board Chair Lee Morgan said.

Their appointments come as four members of the board retire their posts. Trustees Pavel Curtis, Allyn S. Hansson Feinberg, Rozell W. “Prexy” Nesbitt, and Nancy Crow, all alumni of the College, have served on the board since the fall of 2008.

“When it would have been easier to simply give lip service to this movement, these Antiochians gave their time, expertise and resources to establish a firm foundation for an independent Antioch College. For that, we are eternally grateful,” Morgan said. “Their personal and professional lives might be pulling them away from board service right now, but their commitment to Antioch College is unwavering; we expect to continue our relationship with them as colleagues and friends.”

Crow had served as a trustee of the University, negotiator in the Continuation Corporation and was elected president of the Alumni Board. Her final term ends this summer. Foley replaces her as Alumni Board president and takes her seat as an ex-officio member of the Board Pro Tempore.

Foley graduated from Antioch in 1964 with a bachelor’s in philosophy. He earned master’s and doctoral degrees in communication from the University of Iowa and spent much of his career on the faculty at The Ohio State University, where he was professor and chair of the department of communication. Currently, he is an organizational leadership and development consultant.

Alvarez graduated from Antioch in 1996, was a one-time community manager, and served as an assistant to the president for multicultural affairs. She is currently the assistant principal at the Collegiate Institute for Math and Science in the Bronx, New York. Alvarez is also on the Antioch College Community Governance Task Force and served on the Presidential Search Committee.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – May 19, 2011 – The Glen Helen Nature Preserve at Antioch College invites bug enthusiasts to bring their personal collections, share their expertise, and participate in non-lethal collection demonstrations during BUGSTOCK, a day of bug-related adventures that begins at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 21, at the Glen Helen Trailside Museum, 505 Corry Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Bugstock is an opportunity for the public and professionals alike to share their enjoyment and knowledge of invertebrates in an informal outdoor setting. Through interpretive hikes, identification, catch and release demonstrations, and community collaborations, we hope to increase public awareness of our ecosystem’s most diverse, abundant and vital animals. All ages are invited.

Those wishing to exhibit private displays or to conduct a more detailed species inventory before doors open should contact Matthew Herron, Glen Helen extension naturalist, at 225-620-2810. YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – May 17, 2011 – Antioch College President Mark Roosevelt will deliver a “State of the College” address at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 20, in Herndon Gallery, South Hall, on Antioch’s campus. The public is invited to attend.

The talk will be delivered during the public portion of the May meeting of College trustees and will be streamed live at http://antiochcollege.org/media/live_stream/.

College trustees will meet from Friday, May 20, through Sunday, May 22. They will discuss budgets, fund-raising, and the College’s business plan in executive sessions, which are closed to the public.

In his public address, Roosevelt is expected to discuss several recent milestones for the College. These include:

• Successes in Admission: Thirty-five students will enter the College in the fall as Horace Mann Fellows. Enrollment number exceed the twenty-five projected for the first class.
• State Licensure to Award Degrees: The Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents has granted Antioch College with provisional authorization for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees through the next review on December 31, 2014.
• Campus Renovations: Refurbishments to McGregor Hall, the main classroom building, and Birch Hall, the primary student dormitory, are progressing as scheduled, while Pennell House has undergone a complete renovation.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – May 11, 2011 – Antioch College will host the Midwest premiere of an exhibition that explores the intersections between mathematics and a wide range of artistic mediums from May 18 to November 1 in Herndon Gallery on the campus in Yellow Springs, 1 Morgan PL, Yellow Springs, OH 45387. Gallery hours are 1:00-4:00 p.m., Tuesdays through Sunday. An opening reception will be held at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21.

Alumnus John Sims ’90 created Rhythm of Structure: Bowery and Beyond/Mathematics, Art and Poetic Reflection from a yearlong series of shows that premiered at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City in 2009. It features major contemporary artists Sol LeWitt, Karen Finley, DJ Spooky, Dread Scott, Ken Hiratsuka, John Sims, Paulus Gerdes, John Hiigli, Vandorn Hinnant and many others.

More than thirty-five poets who participated in the exhibition are also featured in the documentary film accompanying the show, including alumnus Mark Strand ‘57, former Poet Laureate of the United States.

“We are excited to be hosting John Sim’s cutting edge exhibition out of New York City at the Herndon Gallery,” said Anne Bohlen, Arthur E. Morgan Fellow and program organizer. “We are looking forward to creating community involvement in the evolving MathematicalGraffitiWall and other exhibition performance events that we will be organizing in the next six months.”

Numerous Miami Valley visual artists, poets, dancers, musicians, community members and students will be invited to investigate and celebrate the overlapping territories of mathematics and art through both the MathematicalGraffitiWall and performance events.

The exhibition’s arrival in Yellow Springs is timed partly to coincide with the College’s 2011 Alumni Reunion weekend, which has as its theme “Science & Invention.” Nobel Laureate and Antioch alumnus Mario Capecchi '61 graduate of the College, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his graduation from the College and deliver the keynote address.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – May 6, 2011 – Jim Petro, Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, has granted provisional authorization to Antioch College to offer the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.

State authorization is a critical step in Antioch College’s revival. Approval from the chancellor is a required statutory authorization that gives Antioch College legal license to operate as a legitimate institution of higher education.

This approval is also required in order for the College to submit its formal application for accreditation to the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Chancellor’s approval follows a positive recommendation from a review team that visited the College in January. The team acknowleged in its recommendation that Antioch “meets the Chancellor’s standards for undergraduate programs.”

Authorization will continue through December 31, 2014. Until then, the College must submit annual reports to address any concerns of the OBR. The Chancellor’s staff will perform a follow-up review of the College’s programs prior to December 31, 2014 to determine continued authorization.
