STATEMENT FROM NANCY CROW, PRESIDENT OF THE ANTIOCH COLLEGE ALUMNI BOARD

“The Antioch College Alumni Association looks forward to working with the Antioch University Board of Trustees, University administration and the Antioch community in crafting a viable plan for the survival and continued operation of Antioch College.  We especially appreciate the Board of Trustees’ candor and openness as we enter into this noteworthy partnership.

We recognize that time is short and the task is large.  But the commitment and passion expressed this weekend by College alumni, students, faculty, staff and Yellow Springs residents provides an inspiring foundation as we continue our work throughout the next several weeks.”

ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP TO WORK WITH ALUMNI BOARD

by Lynda Sirk, Director of Communications, Antioch College, Monday, August 27, 2007

ANTIOCH COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE
EMBARGOED UNTIL 11:00 AM EASTERN

Productive weekend results in intent to work together.

YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO – Following an extraordinary and special meeting focused on listening to the Antioch community, the Antioch University Board of Trustees approved a resolution to work with the College Alumni Board to allow the Alumni Boardto demonstrate, by the October 2007 Board of Trustees meeting, the financial and academic feasibility of the College Alumni Board’s proposal for the continued operation of the College.

The Trustees stipulated that the Alumni Board’s proposal will need to develop a realistic business plan with required benchmarks as established by the Trustees, the Chancellor and the University Leadership Council and created in cooperation with the College Alumni Board.

To assist with the plan’s creation, the Board resolved to “work closely with the Alumni Board to provide due diligence access to all appropriate data, consistent with state and federal regulations.” At the Board of Trustees’ direction, Board Chair Arthur Zucker will appoint representatives of the Board of Trustees and University administration to work in conjunction with the Alumni Board.

Chair Zucker emphasized the basis of the decision focused on the unprecedented energy, sharing of constructive ideas, and commitment of time and money to the College by its alumni and other stakeholders.

“We want to engage the alumni,” he said, “and take advantage of the opportunity this renewed enthusiasm presents and to see if the Alumni Board can further develop their proposal to ensure the continued viability of the College.” However, Chair Zucker also cautioned “in addition to a business plan, there is much more work that needs to be done, not the least of which, is the need to raise millions of dollars in a very short time period to assure that there are sufficient funds to pay for the continued operation of the College.”

The Trustees accepted the College Alumni Board’s offer to contribute to “various costs including, but not limited to, the support of the efforts of the current College Development office.”

Further, the Board affirmed through their resolution that no actions will be taken by the Trustees to endanger the financial stability and academic excellence of Antioch University McGregor or any of the other University campuses.

In a separate vote, the Board of Trustees stated its commitment, through the work of its Governance Committee, to consider the possibility of establishing a board of trustees for Antioch College with significant authority within the framework of a larger Antioch University. The Committee is scheduled to provide a progress report to Board of Trustees in October.

Chairman Zucker strongly emphasized his appreciation to the entire Antioch community for their constructive input, energy and willingness to participate in support of the College.

The Antioch College Alumni Association will formally present its business plan for the continued operation of Antioch College to the Antioch University Board of Trustees this afternoon, in a meeting from 1 to 5 pm at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport, 1717 Airport Exchange Blvd.

Invited stakeholders including current Antioch College students, alumni, faculty, staff and Yellow Springs residents will also participate in the meeting.

Citing financial exigency, the University Board of Trustees voted in June to suspend operations at the College at the close of the 2007-08 school year.  Since then, Antioch College alumni across the country have raised more than $8 million in cash and pledges to maintain continuous operations with a tenured faculty at the 153-year-old Yellow Springs institution.  The Alumni Association’s business plan proposes the establishment of a separate board of trustees to oversee Antioch College.

Earlier this morning, more than 30 alumni, students, faculty, staff, former trustees and townspeople presented testimony to the University Board of Trustees urging the continued operation of Antioch College.  Descendents of Horace Mann, the founder of Antioch College, submitted a letter pledging their continued financial support of the College only upon acceptance of the Alumni Association’s proposal.

Spokespeople will be available at the Holiday Inn Airport all afternoon.  For addtional information on the Antioch College Alumni Associaiton, visit www.antiochians.org.

ALUMNI RAISE $5.3 MILLION IN WEEKEND MEETINGS COAST TO COAST HUNDREDS COME TOGETHER IN EFFORT TO SAVE COLLEGE

ANTIOCH COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 21, 2007

(DATELINE) – In Chicago, they held a picnic. In Columbus, Washington DC, Yellow Springs and Los Angeles they held screenings of the beloved 1960’s film, “The Antioch Adventure.” In Boston and San Francisco, they met at Antioch alumni members’ homes. Antioch College alumni came together across the country in a historic coordinated effort, and in the process, raised over $5.3 million in cash and pledges for the College Revival Fund. This brings total giving to the College Revival Fund to $7.8 million in less than three months since the University Board of Trustees voted to suspend operations at the historic college.

These national events were part of Support Antioch College Weekend, a coordinated weekend of seminars, fundraisers and activities sponsored by 20 chapters of Antioch College alumni across the country August 17-19. This weekend was designed to raise awareness and rally alumni and supporters of Antioch’s historic mission of liberal arts education, in the face of a unilateral decision by the University Board of Trustees to close the College at the end of the 2007-08 school year.

“This is the first time Antioch College alumni chapters across the country have joined forces for a weekend of concentrated activity,” Nancy Crow, president of the Antioch College Alumni Association, said. “The time for action is now, and our alumni are making their voices heard.”

Antioch College, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, has been a bastion of American liberal arts education for more than 150 years. It has been a pioneer in cooperative education, community governance, student body diversity, and free and open inquiry.

On June 9, 2007, the Antioch University Board of Trustees voted to suspend operations at Antioch College as of July 1, 2008, asserting that financial exigency warranted a necessary and justifiable budget curtailment at the College. On June 24, 2007, the elected Antioch College Alumni Association Board of Directors, representing more than 17,000 College alumni, unanimously accepted a Resolution for the Revival of Antioch College.

The resolution expresses the alumni’s commitment to the uninterrupted continuation of Antioch College as an institution of higher education with a tenured faculty, and charges the Alumni Board of Directors to negotiate conditions with the Antioch University Board of Trustees and the President of Antioch College that will ensure the short-term continuation and long-term viability of the College, its physical plant, and its unique educational mission.

The Alumni Board has established a College Revival Fund to raise the financial resources necessary to save and strengthen the College. It is this fund that has drawn together hundreds of alumni who support the continued operation of the College.

Support Antioch College Weekend coincides with three significant events:

  1. The canceled August 16 webinar by the Antioch University Board of Trustees explaining its decision to suspend College operations.
  2. The University Board of Trustees meeting August 24-26 in Cincinnati.
  3. The first week of fall classes at Antioch College August 27-31.

“Since the announcement of the closure, new chapters have sprung up and gone into overdrive,” Crow said. “Chapters have posted alumni testimonials on YouTube, written letters and editorials of support, and reached out to alumni in their areas to enlist their involvement in the campaign.

“We are asking our alumni and supporters to visit our website, www.antiochians.org, to find out how they can get involved to keep the College open,” Crow said. Paraphrasing Antioch College founder Horace Mann’s famous credo, “Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity,” Crow urged alumni, “Be ashamed to let Antioch College die!”

Alumni Seek Answers Regarding Financial Condition of Antioch College

Online Information Session Provides an Opportunity

Members of the Antioch College Alumni Association welcome the opportunity to pose questions to Art Zucker, Chair of the University Board of Trustees and Toni Murdock, Chancellor of the University in an online dialog scheduled for Thursday, August 16 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Our alumni are strongly encouraged to visit the Antioch College website at www.antioch-college.edu to post questions in advance.

The Alumni Association, representing over 17,000 Antioch College alumni, rejects the decision made in June by the University Board of Trustees to suspend operations and has been instructed to negotiate a path that will avoid closure. It is also acknowledged that the Alumni Association must take up the lead to raise the funds necessary to strengthen Antioch College to ensure that it is strong and ready to welcome generations of new students.

“Important questions need to be answered in this session. It is our hope that the University Board of Trustees will take this opportunity to disclose, in a fully transparent fashion, the financial circumstances which led them to justify such a drastic action.” -said Nancy Crow, ’70, President of the Antioch College Alumni Association. The Alumni Association will be prepared with a response for the media immediately following the online session.
