Karl Grossman ’64 has specialized in doing investigative reporting in a variety of media for more than 40 years. He teaches as well as practice journalism. He is a professor of journalism at the State University of New York/College at Old Westbury where his courses include Investigative Reporting. For over 15 years he has hosted the nationally-aired TV program Enviro Close-Up and has written and narrated TV documentaries for EnviroVideo including Nukes In Space: The Nuclearization and Weaponization of the Heavens. He is the chief investigative reporter for WVVH-TV and does weekly radio commentary for WLIU-FM. He is the author of six books including Cover Up: What You Are Not Supposed to Know About Nuclear Power; Power Crazy; and The Wrong Stuff: The Space Program’s Nuclear Threat to Our Planet. He has been awarded the George Polk, James Aronson and John Peter Zenger Awards. On memories of Antioch College: I was attracted to Antioch because of its reputation for political and social activism. My interest was to become a college professor, of sociology perhaps. But
that Antioch co-op at the Cleveland Press got me into journalism. And,
after 15 years as a reporter, most of these doing investigative
reporting for the Long Island Press, I got into academia, as a
professor at the State University of New York/College at Old Westbury.
Opened in 1965, it is a college planned, in part, as a version of
Antioch in the SUNY system; there was Antioch presence on its planning
committee. I’ve been at Old Westbury for 30 years. So I ended up both
teaching and doing journalism.
