Last Sunday, the Dayton Daily News featured a two part spread on Glen Helen and its executive
director, Nick Boutis. The article discussed the challenges of
overseeing a 300-acre nature preserve and the new College leadership’s commitment to restore the reserve. Boutis talks frankly about how, in
the past, the Glen was expected to be self-supporting; this has led to
putting off restoring the eight building complex, once a model for environmental education facilities. The change in leadership at the College has led to a renewed commitment to restoring and enhancing the forest, programs and facilities in the Glen. “Long a living laboratory and outdoor classroom for students and faculty at
Antioch, Glen Helen will play an even bigger role as the college expands its
environmental curriculum to focus on energy, water conservation and food
production.”

Antioch College alumni board member Dr. Terry Bonhurst
Blackhawk ’68, founder and executive director of InsideOut Literary Arts
Project, was a guest at the White House yesterday, November 4, 2009, where she accepted
the Coming Up Taller Award, an honor bestowed annually by the President’s
Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Blackhawk accepted the award on behalf of InsideOut’s Citywide Poets
program.

Antioch
College held its first Reunion as an independent college this past
weekend and 450 alumni from all over the country returned to Yellow
Springs, Ohio to celebrate.
The weekend was, to put it mildly,
jam-packed. First up was the largest Work Project in recent memory,
with over 50 alums coming to campus early to help get the campus ready
for Reunion. These dedicated alumni planted flower, trimmed hedges, and
worked on sprucing up Olive Kettering Library. “I saw one alum working
on the [library] entrance at 2:30 in the morning,” said Nancy Crow ’70, President of the Alumni Board, during her talk during the Alumni Association meeting.

Award-winning children’s and YA author Norma Fox Mazer, Antioch College class of 1954, died October 17 after a battle with brain cancer. She was 78.
