The November 7th volunteer work day in the college organic garden was a smashing success! Over twenty volunteers joined with Scott Abla, College Arborist, and Julian Sharp, Manager of Volunteer Work, to clear brush, remove invasive species, save and relocate trees, and winterize the grounds so that volunteers can grow fruits and vegetables this coming spring and summer. The garden has taken many forms over the past few decades, at times providing healthy food for parts of campus. Recently it has become overgrown due to a lack of upkeep, however, the soil is rich and provides the opportunity to grow various fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Dr. Robert Willkens ’50 — doctor, civic leader, father, husband — died Wednesday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle of complications from pneumonia and the H1N1 virus. He was 82.
Robert Willkens was a Renaissance man. The Seattle doctor and professor was a skilled researcher who could bury himself in study or the classroom at the University of Washington where he taught — but loved people too much to quit seeing patients.

Education activist Lauretta S. Dankers, 92, Antioch College Class of
1938, advocate for better schools and education programs in Virginia,
died October 25, 2008, in Prince Georges Hospital of Congestive Heart
Disease. In the 1960s Mrs. Dankers was a member of the Arlington
Virginia Citizens Committee for School Improvement and the only woman
on a twelve member sub committee to begin plans for a high school
technical center. She urged the development and application of
Distributive Education and campaigned for liberal local issues.

Catherine Emily Nyquist Fuller, 80, Antioch College
Class of 1951, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at her home
in Benton Harbor. Known by friends as Kate Fuller, she fought a short
but complex battle with kidney disease.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life was held at 1 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Marvin A. Fuller, 82, Antioch College Class of 1950,
died peacefully at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph on April 27, 2009.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on June 27, at Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4340 Lincoln Ave., St. Joseph.

C. Sterling, Antioch College class of 1956, and retired Washington
state worker, of Wimberley, TX, died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009. She was
born July 2, 1933.

work goes on against the backdrop of crimson and gold leaves lining the
walks and adorning the trees.
