Yellow Springs, OH, October 25, 2008-Today, the Antioch College Alumni Board unanimously resolved to raise $255,000 by April 1, 2009 to fund the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute for the full academic year.
“We have pledged as a Board to raise an additional $255,000 needed to fund the full Nonstop program through June 30, 2009, because we know that the quality and creativity of the work being done here is important not only to the future of Antioch College, but also to the future of progressive liberal arts education in this country,” said Ellen Borgersen, Vice President of the Alumni Board. “Members of our Board have collectively spent hundreds of hours with Nonstop faculty, students and staff, and we want all of the alums who have not been able to be here in Yellow Springs to know that the education being offered is academically rigorous and infused with Antioch’s core values: the commitment to experiential learning, to community as a laboratory of democracy, and to winning victories for humanity.”
To kick off the fundraising initiative, this weekend the Antioch College Alumni Board raised $80,200 for the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute from its own members in both cash and pledges. That puts the Board over 60% of the way toward meeting its initial goal of raising of $135,000 by December 1, which will allow the Board to commit to funding Nonstop through June 30. Borgersen said, “We all dug really deep because we wanted to demonstrate our enthusiastic support for the incredible work that the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute faculty and staff have already done, and their exciting plans for the Spring semester.”
“What we have seen this weekend is awe inspiring,” she continued. “The Nonstop events have been incredibly rich, and to see current faculty and students interact with alums is to see that the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute really is the living heart and soul of Antioch College.
“It is critically important to keep the faculty engaged in teaching the Antioch College students of the near future as we await word from the task force that is working to separate Antioch College from Antioch University,” Borgersen concluded. “I urge all alums who care about the future of Antioch College to give now, and to give generously, to support the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute.”
Since the University Board of Trustees announced the suspension of operations in June 2007, alumni across the country have rallied to the defense of their 156 year old alma mater. Alumni chapters have grown worldwide. The Alumni Board is continuing with its fundraising and planning efforts. NONSTOP LIBERAL ARTS INSTITUTE PRESENTS FALL ACADEMIC OPEN HOUSE
On Thursday August 21 at 7:30 p.m. the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute will present a Fall Academic Open House at the John Bryan Center gymnasium, 100 Dayton Street in Yellow Springs, Ohio. This event is free and open to all.
Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute, founded by the former faculty of Antioch College, offers open-source post-secondary educational experience for learners dedicated to innovation, social responsibility and community involvement, both locally and globally. Pursued as an alternative door into higher education or as a means of continuing life-learning interests, Nonstop provides participants with an exciting program of courses, study groups and workshops. The Institute will also host Nonstop Presents!, a semester-long festival of public lectures, films, exhibitions and performances.
The Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute (Nonstop) and Nonstop Antioch (the movement to organize former faculty, staff, students and alumni of Antioch College to keep its soul alive and operating in Yellow Springs), which works closely with Nonstop, are not affiliated with or sponsored by Antioch University or any of the Antioch University campuses or related organizations.
Although Nonstop courses are not currently accredited, their structures and requirements adhere to national crediting standards. Students will maintain Learning Portfolios documenting each course and providing a future opportunity to petition accredited institutions to accept Nonstop Faculty-evaluated course work as transfer credit.
The Institute will offer a wide range of classes in many different disciplines, including anthropology, art, chemistry, communications, dance, journalism, philosophy, theater, political science, and writing. Courses and special events will be scheduled throughout the week with some offerings in the evenings and on Saturdays. At the Open House attendees will be able to interact with faculty one-on-one and receive copies of the course syllabi. There will also be tables set up for people to pre-register for classes, donate to Nonstop Antioch, offer housing or jobs for students, and share expertise. Locked Campus Housing Forces Visiting Alumni to Sleep Outside During their Critical Annual Alumni Reunion Week
Yellow Springs, Ohio (June 21, 2008) – Over 450 Antioch College alumni traveled from across the United States to arrive at the pre-Civil War college campus, despite this year’s lack of reunion housing. Although a most recent announcement made by Antioch University officials, that stated that they were again willing to negotiate with alumni to keep Antioch College open, faculty members were locked out of their offices last week and all campus dormitories, which traditionally have housed alumni during the annual reunions, have remained locked and made unavailable to alumni, many traveling from as far as Portland, Oregon, New York, New York, Canada and Florida. In a response to the lack of housing and the continued conflicting actions of the university officials, Antioch College alumni created a “Tent City” on the most highly-used and visible lawn of the Yellow Springs campus, the “Horseshoe”, the lawn connecting Livermore Street to the historic Main Hall.
“We are claiming the most visible space on the campus as a sign that Antioch College is here to stay,” said Rowan Kaiser, Community Co-Manager for the 2008-2009 academic year of Antioch College, representing the voice of Antioch College alumni. “The college community will never stop working to reclaim the campus, the name, the assets, the heritage and the reputation of our Antioch College.”
Visiting Antioch College alumni have been sleeping in tents during the reunion with no access to hot or cold showers. At night, the Antioch campers have the use of portable toilets. “Not having access to basic facilities, like showers, beds and drinkable tap-water will not deter an Antiochian from participating in the movement to keep the college open,” said Chad Johnston, an alum from 2001 who traveled from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
